(310) Promoting Health One Step at a Time by Addressing Common Treatable Foot Conditions

Date: Monday, June 1, 2026
Time: 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM
Track: Foot & Nail
Session Type: Concurrent Session

Description

This presentation explores the critical disparities in foot and nail care among older adults residing in rural communities, where social isolation and limited healthcare access contribute to untreated foot and nail conditions. These issues, ranging from thickened, brittle, or dystrophic nails to painful corns, calluses, and ulcerations, can significantly impair mobility, increase fall risk, and diminish independence and quality of life. In response, our academic-practice partnership with a local non-profit agency mobilizes interprofessional teams to deliver essential foot and nail care services directly to underserved populations. This initiative not only addresses a pressing public health need but also fosters experiential, collaborative learning for students, reinforcing clinical competencies and community engagement. By promoting mobility and preventing complications, these services exemplify a sustainable, person-centered approach to rural health equity.
