Rupen Shah, MD is a surgical oncologist and Program Director of the General Surgery Residency at Henry Ford Health. His clinical and academic work focuses on improving surgical outcomes through preoperative optimization, with particular emphasis on frailty assessment, risk stratification, and multidisciplinary perioperative care.
Dr. Shah serves as a co-lead for the frailty initiative within the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC), where he has contributed to the development and implementation of frailty screening and optimization strategies across diverse surgical populations. His research examines the impact of frailty on postoperative complications, wound healing, and functional recovery, with a goal of translating population-level quality data into practical, patient-centered prehabilitation interventions.
Through his roles in clinical care, quality improvement, and surgical education, Dr. Shah works closely with nursing, wound, ostomy, and continence specialists to promote team-based approaches to preoperative optimization that improve resilience, enhance recovery, and reduce postoperative morbidity.
